Jakarta – After a package containing a severed pig’s head, Tempo’s editorial office received a second delivery: a box of decapitated rat carcasses. A Tempo cleaning staff member discovered the cardboard box containing six rats on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 08.00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time).
The cleaner initially suspected the box, wrapped in red rose-patterned gift paper, contained instant noodles. The slightly dented box was opened, revealing the severed heads of rats.
The cleaner then alerted other cleaning staff and Tempo’s security team. Upon further inspection, they found six rat carcasses with heads severed and stacked alongside their bodies. The box bore no written message.
A preliminary investigation by the building management indicated that the package containing the rat carcasses was thrown by an unidentified person from outside the office complex’s fence at 02.11 WIB. The incident occurred at Tempo’s office on Palmerah Barat Street, South Jakarta.
Security personnel suspect the box hit a parked car before landing on the asphalt, leaving scratch marks on the vehicle.
On March 19, 2025, Tempo’s editorial office also received a package containing a pig’s head with its ears removed. The package was delivered by a courier wearing apparel from a delivery app and addressed to Francisca Christy Rosana, a politics desk journalist and host of the Bocor Alus Politik podcast.
Tempo’s Editor-in-Chief, Setri Yasra, stated that the rat carcass delivery further clarifies the terror campaign targeting Tempo. Prior to this, on March 21, 2025, the editorial team received threatening messages via the Instagram account @derrynoah, whose operator vowed to continue sending threats “until your office is destroyed.”
Setri emphasized that the pig’s head and rat carcasses represent acts of terror against media work and press freedom. “The sender is deliberately terrorizing journalistic operations,” he said. “If the goal is to intimidate us, we are unshaken—but these cowardly acts must stop.”
On March 21, 2025, Setri visited the National Police Headquarters (Mabes Polri) to report the pig’s head package, which was handed over to police as evidence.
The National Police have formed a team to investigate the perpetrator(s) and their motives. Approximately 20 officers visited Tempo’s office to retrieve the box containing six rat carcasses, delivered in the early hours of Saturday.
