Hundred-Year-Old Ancient Weaving Tool Discovered in Majalengka

MAJALENGKA – macakata.com – A tool resembling a turbine engine, estimated to be hundreds of years old, has been discovered in Majalengka Regency, West Java. The simple tool, made of wood, remains intact. Previously, it was stored in a corner of the Buyut Depok building in Majalengka Kulon Village, Majalengka District.

The Chairman of the Madjalengka Baheula Activist Group (Grumala), Nana Rohmana, said that the discovery began with a conversation among local residents about a sewing store that was once a bustling center for woven fabric production in the early 1900s near the current Majalengka Square.

“The conversation started with local elders mentioning that around the 1900s, near the current Education Office, there was a place for making woven fabrics,” said Nana, also known as Mang Naro, on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.

One of the local elders then showed them a tool that had been stored for hundreds of years at Buyut Depok. After examining it, Grumala requested that the tool be secured and stored at the Gedung Juang Museum, which serves as Grumala’s headquarters.

“We asked nicely, and now the over 100-year-old weaving tool can be seen at the Grumala Museum as educational material for visitors,” said Naro.

A local community leader, known as Pak RW Sena, shared a similar account, stating that many weaving artisans were active in the area until the 1960s. “There were indeed many weaving artisans here. The condition of the weaving tool was slightly damaged, so it’s better to secure it and store it in the museum,” he said.
