Tradition of Munggahan at Kawunghilir Village, Welcoming Ramadan with Mutual Forgiveness and Free Food

MAJALENGKA – For four years, the tradition of Munggahan, or welcoming the holy month of Ramadan by seeking mutual forgiveness, has been preserved and continued in Kawunghilir Village, Cigasong District, Majalengka Regency.

Since the leadership of the village head, Ibu Kuwu Hj. Yosa Novita, the residents of Kawunghilir Village have always felt joy before welcoming the holy month of Ramadan. The joy of eating together for free, to strengthen family ties and relationships, has been a annual tradition in this village.

The Munggahan tradition, which has been held for four years, has always been attended by hundreds of residents of Kawunghilir Village. According to Kuwu Hj. Yosa Novita, this tradition has been carried out as a form of gratitude from the village government and to preserve the tradition of Munggahan before Ramadan.

“I apologize if I have made mistakes, and indeed I have made many mistakes. Please forgive me. Before we perform our fasting, I want to cleanse my heart first, by seeking mutual forgiveness,” said Ibu Kuwu Hj. Yosa Novita in front of the residents of Kawunghilir Village, Friday, February 28, 2025.

Kuwu Hj. Yosa added that, as a human being, she has made many mistakes, both intentionally and unintentionally, and therefore she asked the residents to forgive her.

“Basically, this Munggahan tradition is a form of gratitude from the village government of Kawunghilir, while also preserving the tradition of Munggahan before Ramadan. Thank God it has been successfully carried out for four years, and God willing, it will continue in the years to come,” said the woman who is familiarly called Bunda Yosa.

Head of BPD of Kawunghilir Village, Cigasong District, Majalengka Regency, Iim Ibrahim, stated that his party welcomed the Munggahan tradition of Kawunghilir Village. Because with the existence of the Munggahan tradition which has been running for four years, there are traces of a sense of togetherness and mutual forgiveness among fellow residents, so that a sense of harmony and family ties is established.

“Our worship as humans is divided into two, Hablum Minallah and Hablumminannas. So this moment is one of them,” he said.

A number of residents of Kawunghilir Village, Cigasong District, Majalengka Regency, stated that they felt grateful because every time Munggahan, before performing fasting in the month of Ramadan, they were always invited by the Kuwu and Pemdes Kawunghilir to eat together. Residents also forgave each other for all mistakes and mutually forgave each other.
